HISTORY OF THE EVENT
The Concours d’ Elegance Durban is the brainchild of two Classic car enthusiasts John Aritho and Avish Maharaj who in 2017 came up with the idea of an event that brought the best of the beautiful warm city of Durban on the East Coast of South Africa and Classic cars in a relaxed fashionable atmosphere.
The 1st Concours d Elegance Durban was held at the award-winning Durban Country Club on the 12th of August 2018 and this was a great success with an attendance of 165 classic cars as well as an attendance of over 2,500 people.
DURBAN AND THE CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE:
Durban Tourism has been a proud sponsor of the Concours d Elegance as one of the prime reasons of the event is to showcase Durban as the ‘Warmest City in South Africa’ – warm people, warm beaches and hot cuisine!
Where does the event go from here and what is the vision for the future? It is fortunate that the Concours d’ Elegance Durban is based in one of the most picturesque parts of the country and together with its setting, coupled to a temperate early Spring climate should make this a must attend destination for those with a motoring passion.
Southern Africa is lacking in hosting such an event of this magnitude and it is believed that given the popularity of high end Concours d’ Elegance shows that are held annually throughout the USA, Europe and even the Middle East that there is no reason in believing that such a similar style of event would not be warmly and enthusiastically embraced and welcomed by all those who might just have a drop of petroleum coursing through their veins.
South Africa, especially, has a lot to offer the motoring enthusiast given our sunny climate, warm hospitality, top notch accommodation, stunning scenery, potential safaris and fine dining it can easily be determined that an event such as this can be developed into a ‘happening’ that will be enthusiastically embraced by the discerning motoring fanatic wishing to participate or just for being there.
The history of Automotive evolution is prominent in Durban as the first Tram in Africa was operated in Durban on the Point area in xxxxx.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Durban has often been described as the ‘Motor car Capital of South Africa’ based on a population that is thrives in the beauty of the automobile.
The existence of the ‘Top Gear Live’ events in Durban and the great success that they enjoyed in Durban is one of the testaments of this. Durbanites enjoyed their own ‘Grand prix’ racing at the Brooklands Track in Clairwood during the 1930s and more recently hosted the South African leg of the A1 Grand Prix in 2007.
Durban will be hosting the Durban Concours d’Elegance at the prestigious Durban Country Club the Championship Golf Club that was established in 1922 and has an illustrious history having hosting the South African Open for 17 different occasions and voted one of the Top 100 golf courses of the World.
DURBAN’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS MOTORING EVENT
The Durban Concours d’Elegance is scheduled to be a premier family event with a specialized Children Auto Village that have star attractions from ‘Cars in the Movies’ in a safe environment as a means of attracting the future car collectors of tomorrow.
Note from our Charity Beneficiaries TAFTA:

Tafta is extremely excited to be associated with the Concurs de Elegance brand and more especially to be nominated as the beneficiary to this year’s event once more.
Last year Tafta received a donation R10 000 from the event organisers, John Aritho and Avish Maharaj. We are grateful for the support received from the team and we are certainly looking forward to another exciting event.
