The term ‘Concours d’Elegance’ pronounced kon-koor del-i-gahnsliterally means ‘Competition of Elegance’ and better described as ‘an exhibition or parade of vintage and classic motor vehicles in which prizes are awarded for those in the best or most original condition’

The first Concours d’Elegance gatherings date back to the 17th Century French aristocracy, who paraded horse drawn carriages in the parks of Paris during summer weekends and holidays. Over time carriages became horseless and the gatherings became a competition among automobile owners to be judged on the appearance of their automobiles.

Some of the most historic Concours d’Elegance events started in 1950 at the fabled golf course Pebble Beach Golf Course in Monterrey, California the hallmark of the most elite automobiles in the world.

The gathering of 200 of the most elegant collectors’ cars will gather at the Durban Country Club to compete in the most prestigious award ‘Best of Show’

This event will be the first of a tradition of annual events that will happen at Durban Country Club.

This unique competition is not a contest of speed but rather elegance.

Automobiles will be judged for their historical accuracy, their mechanical merit and their style.

Equally as per tradition, competitors and spectators will be encouraged to dress up for this elegant motor event and celebrate Durban and Classic automobiles in their finest glory.

Durban has often been described as the ‘Motor car Capital of South Africa’ based on a population that is thrives in the beauty of the automobile.

The existence of the ‘Top Gear Live’ events in Durban and the great success that they enjoyed in Durban is one of the testaments of this. Durbanites enjoyed their own ‘Grand prix’ racing at the Brooklands Track in Clairwood during the 1930s and more recently hosted the South African leg of the A1 Grand Prix in 2007.

Durban will be hosting the Durban Concours d’Elegance at the prestigious Durban Country Club the Championship Golf Club that was established in 1922 and has an illustrious history having hosting the South African Open for 17 different occasions and voted one of the Top 100 golf courses of the World.

The Durban Concours d’Elegance is scheduled to be a premier family event with a specialized Children Auto Village that have star attractions from ‘Cars in the Movies’ in a safe environment as a means of attracting the future car collectors of tomorrow.

Note from our Charity Beneficiaries TAFTA:

The 1st Annual Concurs de Elegance event provided an opportunity for members of the community to show their support to Tafta – The Association for the Aged, and also demonstrated their passion and love for unique Classic and Custom cars .

Tafta is extremely excited to be associated with the Concurs de Elegance brand and more especially to be nominated as the beneficiary to this year’s event once more.

Last year Tafta received a donation R10 000 from the event organisers, John Aritho and Avish Maharaj. We are grateful for the support received from the team and we are certainly looking forward to another exciting event.
